Metafictional Process-Oriented Writing
1973 - 2000
During 1973-2000 the field embraced a process-centered approach to writing that elevated freewriting, drafting, and personal voice as core craft strategies, expanding student agency across genres. Simultaneously, attention to imagined readers and revision reframed craft as dialogue with an audience, while language itself was treated as performative, enabling writers to foreground voice, rhythm, and self-reflexivity. This confluence fostered cross-genre experimentation and a pedagogy that valued experimentation, construction of text, and conscious authorial presence as legitimate scholarly and artistic practice.
